Dental Care

At Parkway Animal Hospital, we understand the importance of maintaining your pet's oral health. Our dedicated team of veterinarians and staff are committed to providing comprehensive dental care services to ensure that your furry friend's teeth and gums stay healthy and strong.

Why is Dental Care Important for Pets?

Just like humans, pets can experience dental issues such as plaque buildup, tartar, gum disease, and tooth decay. These oral health problems can lead to discomfort, pain, and even more serious health issues if left untreated. Regular dental care is essential to prevent these problems and maintain your pet's overall well-being.

Our Veterinary Dental Services

  1. Dental Examinations: Our veterinarians perform thorough dental examinations to assess the condition of your pet's teeth and gums. This helps us identify any potential issues and develop a personalized treatment plan.
  2. Professional Teeth Cleaning: We offer professional teeth cleaning services to remove plaque and tartar buildup from your pet's teeth. This procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure your pet's comfort and safety.
  3. Dental X-rays: Did you know, after examining x-rays of cats and dogs with teeth that appeared normal to the naked eye, veterinarians found 27.8% of dogs and 41.7% of cats had diseased teeth? In pets with abnormal-looking teeth, veterinarians found additional diseased teeth in 50% of dogs and 53% of cats.1 At Parkway Animal Hospital, we utilize dental X-rays to evaluate the health of your pet's teeth below the gum line. This allows us to detect any hidden dental problems such as tooth root infections, fractures, and resorptive lesions.
  4. Tooth Extractions: In cases where a tooth is severely damaged or infected, our skilled veterinarians can perform tooth extractions. This helps alleviate pain and prevent further complications.
  5. Oral Surgery: We are happy to take biopsies, remove oral tumors and evaluate a histopathology report. For more complex dental issues, we may refer you to a local board-certified veterinary dentist.
  6. Home Dental Care Guidance: Our team will provide you with guidance on how to maintain your pet's oral health at home. This may include recommendations for toothbrushing techniques, dental-friendly diets, and dental treats. Be sure to look for dental treats approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Products that are too hard to bend or break easily—like antlers and bones, synthetic bones, and others—can easily fracture your pet’s teeth.
